The quick and simple answer about being or becoming a Christian means that you (1) Believe in Jesus Christ, (2) accept Jesus Christ as your savior, and (3) follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. All three of these (3) things however can be life changing to an individual once they happen in their lives.
Believing, accepting, and following Jesus Christ are all tied into each other. Following Jesus Christ means that you have accepted Him as your personal savior. You have to believe in Jesus Christ to accept Him as your personal savior and follow him. Sometimes the process of all three can be quick and at other times some sections may take some time. If you have an interest in learning more then we in Christianity call that a "calling". A "calling" is a inner spiritual invitation to learn more.
(21) Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. (22) But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. (23) For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he (or she) is like a man (or woman) observing his (or her) natural face in a mirror; (24) for he (or she) observes himself (or herself), goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man (or woman) he (or she) was.
(25) But he (or she) who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he (or she) does.
Being a Christian also has individual responsibilities tied to the title as "Christian". These responsibilities can lead to some personal difficult decisions that you may face now and in the future. Many Christians are "Cross Wearers" and not followers of Jesus Christ. The term "Cross Wearers" simply means that the Christian individual isn't concerned about doing what Jesus says, they are simply concerned about the symbolism of the cross or crucifix around their necks (or shirts etc...) and not living by the standards that Jesus (and His Father YHWH God) want us to live by.
God gave us a life manual called the Holy Bible. This life manual is not just meant for Christians to learn about God and themselves...it's meant for Christians to share with others what is in it. Many will tell those who have not read the bible for themselves how this life manual has changed their lives. Others (like myself) will share that reading the bible every year can guide you year by year and month by month through different seasons of your life. Christians have also been given a "Great Commission"by Jesus Christ to teach others what they have learned.
Matthew 28:18-20 NKJV
(18) And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. (19) Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (20) teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.
There will be so many questions that you will have and then more questions after that. Simply put being a Christian means being "saved" but what does that mean and how do you become saved? Why does Jesus Christ play such an important role in a Christian's life? What is sin and how does God define sin? All of these are questions that every Christian ( and / or potential Christian) should understand.
For right now take your calling to learn more with a step by step attitude and start with the basics back at the "Answering Questions" page.
